40 Household Cleaning Tips

Stuck with a dirty house or a greasy kitchen sink? Are you unable to find a solution to that dirty stain on your precious wedding gift of expensive bone china set? Or is it the burnt residue on your cooking utensils that bothers you? Well, there is no reason to get angry.

In this article, there are many tips to help you tide over your problem. Here is wishing you a happy scrubbing and a super clean as well as a gleaming kitchen.

Household cleaning tips:

  1. To remove stains from utensils, mix bleaching powder in a tub of water and dip the utensils for a while. Wash them with detergent powder later.
  2. To clean a vessel, which is too oily, try cleaning with a few drops of vinegar.
  3. Although we hardly use copper or brass utensils, these days, there are some heirlooms that we like to maintain. Our grandmothers kept their copper and brass vessels gleaming by rubbing them with half a lemon dipped in salt. The vessels can be washed with soapy water after that.
  4. To add a sheen to the stainless steel utensils, put a few teaspoons of bleach into 500 ml of water and soak the utensils in this solution for a while. This will loosen the deposits on them and brighten them up, too.
  5. Rusty knives are an eyesore. To clean rusty knives, stick the blades into an onion and leave for some time.
  6. If the rice is burnt while cooking and you want to clean the inside of the cooker without much effort, place the bottom half of the cooker in a basin of cold water for 5-7 minutes. The residue will dislodge itself.
  7. For sparkling results, rinse delicate bone china and precious glass in water with a dash of vinegar in it.
  8. Yellowed crockery is every homemaker’s nightmare. Wash your crockery with baking soda or soda bicarb, for sparkling results.
  9. Stubborn grease can ruin a perfect day. Use aluminum foils of the tablets to clean greasy vessels. They don’t leave any scratches, either.
  10. Rubbing plastic containers with oil before placing food in them prevents stains.
  11. To clean the vessel in which milk, masala or rice has dried and left a stubborn residue along the edges, rinse out the vessel and keep upside down on a flat surface so that no air escapes. The hard caked dirt comes off in a few seconds.

  12. After extracting sour lime juice, dry the peels in the sun. Grind the dried peels to a powder and use it for washing utensils. Your utensils will sparkle. The benefits don’t end here. You can mix the powder with gram flour and use it as a face scrubber as well.
  13. To remove stubborn stains from utensils, soak them in water with a little bleach. Wash them the next day and watch them shine.
  14. To remove burnt food particles from aluminum vessels, rub them with sandpaper. I don’t really recommend that you do it often because the sandpaper is likely to leave scratches on the vessels.
  15. Washing ice trays with hot soapy water will prevent them from sticking to the floor of the freezer compartment.
  16. Tea and coffee stains can be removed from utensils by rubbing a little salt over them and washing after a few minutes.
  17. To clean stained sinks, use a polythene scrub with Vim and a drop of coconut oil. Scrub in circular motions for a spotless sink.
  18. For a sparkling kitchen sink and bright tiles, rub a mixture of bleaching powder and water thoroughly, over the tiles. Leave overnight. Rinse with plain water in the morning to get gleaming tiles.
  19. To remove rust from strainers, warm them on high heat and dust thoroughly. The rust will disappear.
  20. Add a handful of common salt to the washing powder while cleaning vessels, for better results.
  21. You must have heard of many uses of the banana peel but here is an unusual one. To clean greasy pots and pans, rub them with the inner side of a banana peel.
  22. To add sparkle to your china cups, boil them in water to which baking soda has been added.
  23. Eggs, onions and garlic can leave a horrible smell on the utensils. Utensils smelling of garlic, onion or eggs should be cleaned with salt and washed with cold water to remove the odor.
  24. Here is a solution to your burnt pan problem. Cover the bottom of your badly burnt pan with a thick layer of soda bicarbonate; add a little water and leave to soak overnight. In the morning, the burnt bits will come off easily.
  25. Have you ever smelt the can in which you store edible oil? It is most likely to smell quite awful besides being sticky. Rinse oil cans with soap nuts powder and sour curd along with a little water and wash well. The can will neither retain the smell or the stickiness of oil.
  26. To clean stainless steel vessels stained by hard or saltwater, put a small quantity of ‘idli’ or ‘dosa’ batter into them and add water up to the brim. Keep aside for 24 hours and then wash. The vessels will sparkle again.
  27. For easy removal of sticker labels from stainless steel vessels, run a burning candle along the edges of the label.
  28. Used oil is excellent for removing stickers, labels from stainless steel utensils.
  29. Add a few drops of glycerine to water in which glass bottles are to be boiled. The bottles will clean more easily and won’t crack, either.
  30. Here is another tip for cleaning burnt pans. Soaking them in cold water overnight and then bringing to a boil can clean burnt pans.
  31. To clean dirty, greasy, kitchen dusters, boil them in soap and washing soda solution. Add some paraffin mixture after removing from the gas and boil again for 20 minutes.
  32. Brass utensils will clean faster if rubbed with a mixture of mud and lemon juice.
  33. If there are tough stains on non-stick pans, fill the pan with a cup of water; add half a cup of vinegar and 2 tablespoons of soda bicarb. Boil for 10 minutes, dry and grease lightly with salad oil.
  34. Spread an old sheet of newspaper while cleaning vegetables to make cleaning up easier.
  35. If the kitchen sink gets blocked, add some pieces of crystals of salt (not the powdered salt) and leave overnight.
  36. Plastic plates get awfully soiled due to grease and easily acquire turmeric stains. Cleaning plastic plates with wheat flour will make them sparkle and also remove turmeric stains.
  37. Cleaning grease is not an easy task. It leaves a sticky residue even after an all-out effort. To clean a greasy grill, sprinkle it with soda bicarb and clean.
  38. To wash a greasy pan, rub it with some gram flour and wash with soap and water. The grease will come off easily.
  39. To remove the ‘eggy’ smell from crockery, rub it with used tea leaves or rinse with a little vinegar.
  40. If the inside of an aluminum vessel is stained, boil water along with a little vinegar for about ½ an hour. Then wash thoroughly.
