As I sat down to write this article about the Preppers Mentality, I thought I would Google the subject to see what else has been written. As is true for most of you, Google begins to auto-populate results as you type in the letters in the search box. Where am I going with this, you ask?

and here come the results:

preppers mental illness, preppers mental health, preppers mental disorder.

Gee, are these the most common search terms related to Preppers Mentality? Are we all crazy? Most people’s perceptions are developed through the news media, television and movies. Most mainstream media reports about Preppers are negative. There are several responsible journalists that portray Preppers in a positive light, when they can. When people think television, they think “Doomsday Preppers“. Love the show, but most times I don’t think that National Geographic does the Prepper community any favors.

Do we care? We shouldn’t, but it’s hard not to get butt hurt when you are constantly vilified or portrayed as “crazy”.

But none of that is important to the issue of being mentally prepared to be a Prepper. Prepping is a mindset, a lifestyle. Like most aspects of your life, it comes down to making choices. The Prepper mentality requires decision making. Getting your head in the right place. Are you a committed prepper in a full time prepper mindset or are you more concerned with self sufficiency and simply see being a prepper as a part of becoming more independent? Are you interested in being self-reliant, and to what degree?

Survival Secrets That Actually Help You

The answer is very personal to each of us. I have become acquainted with a lot of Preppers via social media, podcasts and interviews. We come in all shapes and sizes. There are homesteaders whose primary interest is sustainable living. There are survivalists, oftentimes ex-military, who pride themselves in being able to survive with nothing more than a good knife. Then there are, frankly, wannabees who simply pay lip service to the concept of Prepping. Lastly, there are some who are living out some type of action hero, apocalyptic action hero fantasy. I fear those guys the most.

My goal is to help create committed preppers. A committed prepper chooses a self-sustainable, preparedness lifestyle. A committed prepper takes the best of homesteading, survivalist training, post-apocalyptic fantasy and combines that into a well-organized preparedness plan. The committed prepper recognizes that our personal lives are subject to unexpected setbacks and that our world is fraught with danger.

The committed prepper adopts a preparedness lifestyle to insure against life’s challenges, small and large. This requires developing a prepper’s mentality.

How will you deal with disaster, setbacks in your life or the very real possibility of a TEOTWAWKI event. A preppers mentality has to include keeping calm and having the comfort of knowing that your Preparedness Plan will insure your survival. Your emotions will be on high alert. Cool, calm heads will always prevail in a crisis. Think back to your days in school or college. Before an exam, if you knew the subject matter, your attitude was “I’ll ace this test”. A well executed Preparedness Plan will make you mentally prepared to be a committed prepper and give you the comfort of knowing that you can deal with all of life’s challenges.

My hope is that if enough people are prepared, more self-reliant and more dedicated to personal and family security and independence, then more like-minded individuals like us will survive. The advocates and enablers of dependency, vulnerability, and conformity are the masters of regulation, legislation, sales and organization.  They sell their damaging notions and spread their ideas while the values of preparedness and self-reliance are left virtually defenseless, and are demonized. Their loss.

Get mentally tough fellow Preppers and remember the words of a young lad in North Carolina on Doomsday Preppers, No Such Thing As A Fair Fight:

“When the Apocalypse comes, we’ll be safe … and you won’t.”

Make the choice to prepare yourself mentally to become a committed prepper. Be ready when disaster strikes.  Because you never know when the day before … is the day before.

Prepare for tomorrow.
